Sometimes band names are crazy; they often have a real logic behind them, but despite all the underlying logic, they lead you down completely the wrong path. Such is the case with AMBIENT DEN and their self-titled CD. This Australian band doesn’t take you on a free-floating, relaxed ambient journey through the cosmos of electronic music with a yoga-like slant, but rather through the Floydian dreamscapes of sublime symphonic sound aesthetics, into whose harmonies the listener can immerse themselves just as deeply as on a heavenly journey on ambient wings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that probably explains the band and album name a little bit for now (but the real explanation can be found in our conclusion!). The music of the Australian prog trio is ethereal, heavenly, and combines symphonic art rock with neo-progressive retro rock, which draws on familiar art\/prog\/symphonic sounds (especially those of Pink Floyd and Genesis), particularly selecting the floating harmonies and tranquil moments and uniting them in their own ambient sound universe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you delve a little deeper into this mission, it quickly becomes clear where this atmosphere comes from. For in the booklet, designed as a small eight-page poster and containing all the lyrics, the name Ben Craven immediately stands out, who, as is well known, is famous for his symphonic, Floydian, and very harmonious solo albums ( and is also very popular on our site ).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is exactly where AMBIENT DEN picks up, or rather continues, with the cover featuring the observatory and the rising or setting sun on the horizon perfectly illustrating the musical mood behind “Ambient Den,” and the lyrics also capture this atmosphere perfectly: “All we need is an earthrise in our dark skies \/ Summoning day from the night\u2026”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The recurring appearance of an acoustic guitar, providing a delicate acoustic counterpoint to the bombastic keyboards, is also clever and far-sighted. After all, who doesn’t immediately think of “Wish You Were Here”?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Complexity and harshness are deliberately avoided in AMBIENT DEN’s sonic journey. This is beneficial for the overall atmosphere, the background of which, incidentally, was created before the horrors and enforced silence of the Corona era, when the Australian trio initially just got together to jam, but from this came this truly ambitious album, which \u2013 as they themselves noted \u2013 is reminiscent of the music of Floyd’s Gilmour & Wright and the Genesians’ Rutherford & Banks. And that’s exactly right.
So: anyone who experiences moments of musical bliss with these names should definitely embark on AMBIENT DEN’s musical journey, which also follows a cinematic concept in which humanity sets out in search of a new world, now located somewhere in the sky above the stars, and which unfolds vividly and expansively before the listener’s mind’s eye and ears in the seventeen-minute track “Terraforming.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CONCLUSION: First, a necessary clarification: AMBIENT DEN is not an electronic, somewhat tedious ambient journey, but rather the project\/band name is a cleverly arranged anagram of the three musicians’ first names: BEN Craven, TIM Bennetts, and DEAN Povey. They embark on a tranquil sonic journey, clearly influenced by PINK FLOYD and GENESIS, searching for new habitats for humanity. Ambitious and impressive. A real treat for anyone who appreciates the quiet retro-prog of these bands. Definitely a pleasure, even if much of it sounds familiar. But that is quite obviously the intention behind “Ambient Den.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A quick postscript regarding the bonus tracks: These contain four shortened single versions of the significantly longer songs originally featured on “Ambient Den.” AMBIENT DEN could have easily omitted these entirely, as they somewhat detract from the overall impression of this concept album. One point is deducted for this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Manchmal ist es verr\u00fcckt mit Bandnamen, hinter denen sich zwar eine echte Logik verbirgt, die einen allerdings trotz aller hintergr\u00fcndiger Logik auf den v\u00f6llig falschen Weg f\u00fchren. So wie bei AMBIENT DEN und ihrer selbstbetitelten CD. Denn diese australische Band nimmt einen nicht etwa auf eine frei schwebende, entspannte Ambient-Reise durch den Kosmos elektronischer Musik mit Yoga-Hang mit, sondern viel eher durch die floydianischen Traumwelten erhabener symphonischer Klang-\u00c4sthetik, in deren Harmonien der H\u00f6rer aber gerne ebenso tief eintauchen kann wie in eine himmlische Reise auf Ambient-Fl\u00fcgeln.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Und damit erkl\u00e4rt sich wohl auch ein wenig Band- und Album-Name f\u00fcr’s Erste (Die echte Aufl\u00f6sung dazu ist aber in unserem Fazit zu entdecken!). Die Musik des australischen Prog-Trios schwebt, ist himmlisch und vereint symphonischen Art- mit neoprogressivem Retro-Rock, der aus altbekannten Art\/Prog\/Sympho-Kl\u00e4ngen (speziell die von PINK FLOYD und GENESIS) besonders die schwebenden Harmonien und ruhigen Momente w\u00e4hlt und diese in einem eigenen AMBIENT DEN-Klanguniversum vereint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Geht man dieser Mission ein wenig tiefer auf den Grund, dann wird einem doch sehr schnell klar, woher diese Stimmung stammt. Denn in dem als kleines achtseitiges Poster gestalteten Booklet, auf dem auch alle Texte zu finden sind, f\u00e4llt sofort der Name Ben Craven auf, der ja bekanntlich f\u00fcr seine symphonischen, floydianischen und sehr harmonischen Solo-Alben bekannt (und unter unserer Seite auch sehr beliebt) ist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Genau hier setzen AMBIENT DEN an oder besser noch fort, wobei schon das Cover mit der Sternenwarte und der unter- oder aufgehenden Sonne am Horizont die musikalische Stimmung hinter \u201eAmbient Den\u201c bestens illustriert und auch die Texte diesbez\u00fcglich genau diese Atmosph\u00e4re aufgreifen: \u201eAll we need is an earthrise in our dark skies \/ Summoning day from the night\u2026\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Auch dass hierbei immer wieder eine akustische Gitarre auftaucht, die dem Keyboard-Bombast einen filigranen akustischen Kontrapunkt entgegenstellt, ist klug und weit gedacht.
Denn wer denkt hier nicht beispielsweise an \u201eWish You Were Here\u201c?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Komplexit\u00e4t und H\u00e4rte bleiben bei AMBIENT DEN und ihrer Klangreise allerdings unbeachtet. Gut f\u00fcr die Gesamtstimmung, deren Hintergrund \u00fcbrigens vor den Schrecken und der verordneten Stille der Corona-Zeiten entstand, als sich das australische Trio eigentlich nur zum Jammen zusammentat, dabei aber dieses wirklich ambitionierte Album herauskam, das \u2013 wie sie selber feststellten \u2013 an die Musik von den Floydis Gilmour & Wright sowie die Genesianer Rutherford & Banks erinnert. Genau das passt.
Also: Allen, die bei diesen Namen Momente des eigenen musikalischen Gl\u00fccks empfinden, sollten sich unbedingt mit AMBIENT DEN auf die Musikreise begeben, die zudem noch einem cineastischen Konzept folgt, in dem sich die Menschheit auf die Suche nach einer neuen Welt begibt, die irgendwo am Himmel inzwischen der Sterne liegt und sich intensiv in dem Siebzehnmin\u00fcter \u201eTerraforming\u201c vor dem geistigen Auge und inmitten der Ohren des H\u00f6rers breit ausladend entfaltet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FAZIT: Als erstes eine notwendige Aufkl\u00e4rung: AMBIENT DEN sind keine elektronische, etwas erm\u00fcdende Ambient-Reise, sondern der Projekt- bzw. Bandname ist ein geschickt angeordnetes Anagramm der drei Musiker-Vornamen BEN Craven, TIM Bennetts und DEAN Povey, die sich auf eine ruhige und offensichtlich von PINK FLOYD und GENESIS beeinflusste Klangreise begeben und dabei nach neuen Lebensr\u00e4umen f\u00fcr die Menschheit sucht. Ambitioniert und beeindruckend. Ganz gro\u00dfes Kino f\u00fcr alle, denen der ruhige Retro-Prog besagter Bands am Herzen liegt. Definitiv ein Genuss, auch wenn einem sehr viel dabei altbekannt vorkommt. Doch das ist ganz offensichtliche Absicht hinter \u201eAmbient Den\u201c.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ein kurzes PS zu den Bonustracks: Hier gibt’s n\u00e4mlich vier gek\u00fcrzte Single-Versionen der im Original auf \u201eAmbient Den\u201c vorhanden, deutlich l\u00e4ngeren Songs. Das jedenfalls h\u00e4tten sich AMBIENT DEN komplett sparen k\u00f6nnen, da sie so den Gesamteindruck dieses Konzept-Albums etwas zerst\u00f6ren. Daf\u00fcr gibt\u2019s hier einen Punkt Abzug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
