Ambient Den is a new project by Australian multi-instrumentalist Ben Craven, who has primarily attracted attention through his solo albums. The name Ambient Den is an anagram of the first names of the three band members, Ben, Tim, and Dean, rather than a reference to the musical style they offer. This is a science fiction concept album. It tells the story of humanity’s search for a new home in the universe. The record contains six tracks, three of which are purely instrumental; four single edits have also been included on the CD. The band itself describes its music as a mixture of space and progressive rock, with the sixteen-minute instrumental “Terraforming” being the closest thing to space rock. Most of the tracks are reminiscent of Pink Floyd’s late “Future History Pt. 2,” but with surprising funk elements. Ben Craven’s guitar solos are truly beautiful, but Tim Bennett’s keyboards also provide repeated highlights. A cool record.

Ambient Den ist ein neues Projekt um den australischen Multiinstrumentalisten Ben Craven, der bisher ja vor allem durch seine Soloalben aufgefallen ist. Bei dem Namen Ambient Den handelt es sich um ein Anagramm der Vornamen der drei Bandmitglieder Ben, Tim und Dean und weniger um einen Hinweis auf die von ih- nen gebotene Musikrichtung. Wir haben es hier mit einem Science-Fiction-Kon- zeptalbum zu tun. Erz\u00e4hlt wird eine Ge- schichte von der Suche der Menschheit nach einer neuen Heimat im Univer- sum. Die Platte enth\u00e4lt sechs Tracks, drei davon rein instrumental; erg\u00e4nzend hat man noch vier Single-Edits auf die CD gepackt. Die Band selbst sieht die Musik als eine Mischung aus Space- und Pro- gressive Rock, wobei das sechzehnmin\u00fc- tige instrumentale,,Terraforming”” noch am ehesten dem Space Rock zuzuordnen ist. Die meisten St\u00fccke erinnern an die sp\u00e4ten Pink Floyd,,,Future History Pt. 2″” \u00fcberrascht allerdings mit Funk-Ele- menten. Ben Cravens Gitarrensoli sind wirklich wundersch\u00f6n, aber auch die Key- boards von Tim Bennetts sorgen immer wieder f\u00fcr H\u00f6hepunkte. Coole Scheibe.
