Australian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Ben Craven (guitar, bass, programming, vocals), who has been working as a solo artist since 2007 after leading his own band, TUNISIA, has teamed up with Tim Bennetts (keyboards, piano, vocals) and Dean Povey (drums, vocals) to launch AMBIENT DEN, a melodic rock project launched in 2015.
While the album is conceptually based around the grand story of leaving Earth in search of a new home on a faraway planet, the sound itself isn’t as heavily space-rock/ambient as one might expect from the project’s name and cover art. Building on the imaginative, dreamy symphonic rock influenced by PINK FLOYD and ’70s British prog rock that continues the legacy of Ben Craven’s solo work, the album combines fresh ideas and approaches from Tim, Dean, and other new collaborators to produce a dreamy, vocal-heavy melodic rock production. This high-level masterpiece, which can be said to be a legitimate evolution of Ben Craven’s solo works, skillfully incorporates the contrast between the dynamic parts where the organ is vibrant and the static parts where the acoustic guitar delicately weaves melodies, creating a cinematic sound image!
