AMBIENT DEN is a band name that sounds like it’s always been there. Yet it emerges from nowhere and unfolds not ambient music, as the name might falsely suggest, but a new world called AMBIENT DEN.
The trio from Australia came together about half a decade ago: musical loner Ben Craven, who under his own name has already created cinematic soundscapes such as ‘Great And Terrible Potions’ or ‘Monster From The Id’, keyboard wizard Tim Bennetts and groove master Dean Povey.
Their debut album is a true band statement, a concept album with a vision: humanity’s journey into space, the search for a new home. Then an airlock opens into the unknown, and acoustic guitar and sparse synth textures paint a tentative picture in ‘Future History Part 1’.
But then, with ‘For All Mankind’, the universe opens up: a hymnal chorus, a brightly glowing keyboard passage, and an emotional guitar solo celebrate classic prog while breathing the present. Then the instrumental gem ‘Provenance’ floats through the void, singing and weeping, as a reminiscence of Gilmour, Holmes, and Oldfield. Then, in ‘Earthrise’, layers of acoustic guitar, vocals, and digital flourishes build up.
But then, with ‘Terraforming’, sixteen minutes of AMBIENT DEN’s entire sonic universe unfold, from the majestic piano intro through dazzling guitar tones, almost baroque keyboard runs, and thunderous organ passages. The album then returns with ‘Future History Part 2’ as a playful homage to hope, complete with a triumphant guitar solo at the end.
‘Ambient Den’ isn’t a loud album, but it’s an album that lingers. A work for listeners seeking soundscapes in which they can lose themselves. Created by three musicians, perhaps as an escape, perhaps as a new home, for Ben, Tim, and Dean, but also for you.

Dann kehrt das Album mit ´Future History Part 2´ als verspielte Hommage an die Hoffnung zurück, samt einem triumphalen Gitarrensolo am Ende.
´Ambient Den´ ist kein lautes Album, aber ein Album, das bleibt. Ein Werk für Hörer, die Klanglandschaften suchen, in denen man sich verlieren darf. Erschaffen von drei Musikern, vielleicht als Fluchtpunkt, vielleicht als neues Zuhause, für Ben, Tim und Dean, aber auch für dich.
